Like many other schools within the local authority, we follow the Kirklees Agreed Syllabus for RE which includes many interesting topics covering four of the main world religions:
Each of the topics, across both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, gives children the opportunity to ask questions about aspects of the religions and to learn about the related beliefs and practices. Children then compare their findings with aspects of other known religions and to their own beliefs, before investigating how these can impact on how people live their lives. The children respond brilliantly to this approach to topics and it generates a fantastic amount of discussion!
The Religious Education curriculum includes a balance of three aims.
1. Knowledge and understanding of a range of religions and other world views.
2. Expression of ideas and insights around questions of beliefs and meanings.
3. Investigation and response to important questions for individuals and the wider community.
Sound Religious Education is also acquired through attitudes and values inherent in the daily life of our Church school. All our RE teaching and learning at Windmill Church of England Primary School aims to help children in their Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development and links closely with the British Values. These thread through the whole of our school curriculum and are as follows:
- The Rule of Law
- Mutual Respect
- Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
- Individual Liberty
The local church vicar, Lesley Mattacks, visits the school on a regular basis, supporting the curriculum in classrooms and leading collective worship. Classes also visit the church and other faith centres to support Religious Education. Parents may exercise their right to withdraw their child from all parts of Religious Education and Collective Worship. For more information, please read our school's RE Policy
